Acupuncture for Fertility

Whether you have just begun thinking about starting a family or have run into big or small road blocks along the way, acupuncture for fertility can guide and support you on your path to parenthood. By taking time to prepare and nurture your body, mind, and spirit pregnancy and beyond, you create a welcoming space where your baby’s soul can thrive and grow.

Acupuncture for fertility can optimize your fertility and help to ensure and smooth and healthy pregnancy. We will address any healthy issues and the physical imbalances that may be interfering with your ability to conceive.

Beyond the physical, acupuncture for fertility works with "Conscious Conception" focusing on several simple but profound concepts: happiness, health, harmony in your primary relationships, and connection to spirit (in whatever form that may take for you). This practice can be applied to any conception journey - from a committed couple planning a natural pregnancy to a single woman using a sperm donor, and same sex couples using ART (Assisted Reproductive Techniques) therapies to those who have chosen surrogacy or adoption as their road to parenthood.

Treatments are catered to your individual journey and - in addition to acupuncture for fertility - may include herbs, supplements, emotional support, lifestyle modifications, and movement therapy. Chinese Medicine is extremely effective in improving fertility rates and successful births.

Studies show that acupuncture for fertility:

  • Increases blood flow to the uterus to promote implantation

  • Improves ovarian function, which may help produce better quality eggs and a larger number of follicles

  • Reduces side effects of drugs used in ART procedures

  • Decrease uterine contractions, intended to encourage implantation, and prevent early miscarriage

  • Reduces stress hormones and anxiety

  • Strengthens the immune system and supports general health to promote a healthy pregnancy and baby

We have guided many individuals and couples to the day when they hold their healthy baby in their arms.  This includes couples who have chosen:

Natural Pregnancy Preparation

In planning for natural conception your treatments will guide the body-mind-spirit into balance. We will closely monitor your cycle and discuss ways to optimize fertility and overall health for you and your baby.

IVF, IUI, and other ART therapies

Acupuncture has been proven to increase the success rate of IVF procedures from 26.1% to 42% in a study published in Fertility and Sterility Journal in April 2002. Your treatments leading up to and through your IVF or IUI protocol will support the phases of your assisted cycle, keep your systems balanced through the process, and help you to hold the intention of conscious conception for you and your child.

Surrogacy and Adoption

These alternative roads to parenthood are not just waiting for a white stork to drop a peaceful baby on your doorstep. All of the excitement and challenges of surrogacy or adoption can take a huge toll on your body and mind–just as you are preparing for many sleepless, yet joyful nights with your little bundle. Conscious conception plays a key role in integrating “life before” to” life with” baby. We will help you to transition into parenthood by restoring balance through restful acupuncture sessions.

Acupuncture for Embryo Transfer

We offer onsite acupuncture for the day of embryo transfer during an IVF cycle; however this procedure is provided only for established patients.

We are trained in the protocol pertaining to IVF transfer, known as the Paulus Protocol, a landmark 2002 study which demonstrated increased pregnancy rates among the group who received acupuncture before and after embryo transfer.

You can read the full study here.

In summary:

A 2002 study, led by Dr. Wolfgang E. Paulus and documented in the journal Fertility and Sterility*, compared women undergoing IVF with and without pre/post transfer acupuncture.
As a result of this study’s outcome, acupuncture has become commonplace in Fertility clinics on transfer day.

Result(s): Clinical pregnancies were documented in 34 of 80 patients (42.5%) in the acupuncture group, whereas the pregnancy rate was only 26.3% (21 out of 80 patients) in the control group.

Conclusion(s): Acupuncture seems to be a useful tool for improving pregnancy rates after ART.
